The Mustang was starting to grow up. At 1969 the Mustang became larger for the second time. The new Mustangs were almost 4 inches longer. The front of the car featured four headlights and a nose with a simpler grille. The fastback had large nonfunctional scoops dug high into its rear fenders. The 1969 design clearly broke from established Mustang styling themes. New models were added including the Grande, the Mach 1, the Boss 302 and the Boss 429. The Grande was a luxurious coupe both on the inside and out.
For those who wanted a performance image, the company came up with a Mach 1 version of the 2+2 fastback available only with the 351, 390 or 428 engines. The Mach 1 also had a luxurious interior. The very exclusive Boss 302 came about because Ford needed a car to go up against the Camaro in the Trans-Am races.

The Boss 429 was created to hold the 429 cubic inch, 7.0 liter hemi-headed V8 for racing in NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing). Only 859 Boss 429s were built during the 1969 model year and they all had large functional scoops on their hoods.
