| The easiest way to tell the difference between the 1965 and 1966 Mustang is that the 1966 does not have the grille dividers. The running horse on the 1966 seems to be floating in air on the grille. Other changes between the 1965 and the 1966 are the color variations (34 choices), a revised instrument cluster and a few slight cosmetic refinements. |

Even more surprising to Ford was that the 1966 was even more popular than the 1965 and Ford sold 607,568 of them: 499,751 coupes, 35,698 2+2s and 72,119 convertibles. That is still the most Mustangs ever sold during a single model year.
